Alliance reacts to Government’s Better Connected transport strategy
The Government’s new Better Connected transport strategy is a welcome step towards making cycling a core part of everyday journeys. This vision has the potential to unlock real behaviour change by giving people the confidence and flexibility to cycle.
Chair of the Alliance, Steve Edgell, comments:
“This commitment from Government for better connected, safer cycling infrastructure is a vital step towards unlocking the full potential of active travel across the UK. We know that nearly half of potential commuters are deterred from cycling due to inadequate infrastructure, so sustained investment in high-quality routes will be key to giving people the confidence to make the switch.
Crucially, making it easier to combine cycling with other modes of transport, including rail, will help more people build cycling into everyday journeys and extend the reach of active travel beyond shorter commutes.
The benefits are clear. The Cycle to Work Scheme has already helped over 2 million people access a bike, with 38% of participants new to commuting by bike – clear evidence it drives genuine behaviour change. More people cycling means a healthier, more productive workforce and stronger local economies, with commuters saving on average £1,262 a year and contributing to £573 million in annual economic benefits.
By continuing to invest in infrastructure and supporting schemes that make cycling more accessible, the Government can help more people choose a healthier, more sustainable way to travel while delivering real economic value to communities across the country.”
